People are increasingly buying midrange Android devices over their more superior alternatives, data from research companies suggests. Strategy Analytics reports that Samsung’s midrange Galaxy A51 was the bestselling Google android phone in the first three months from the year, followed by Xiaomi’s Redmi almost eight. The Galaxy S20 Plus was your only flagship phone in the firm’s top-six ranking, where it arrived third.
“As mobile operators have reduced subsidies in recent years, and many countries are now tumbling into post-virus recession, smartphone consumers globally are becoming increasingly price-sensitive,” Strategy Analytics Associate Director Juha Winter points out, “Consumers want value-for-money devices with good-enough specs at affordable prices. Android is entering a post-premium era.”
Recent research through Canalys paints a similar picture, however the two disagree slightly on which particular midrange Android phone sold probably the most, potentially due to the different ways they’ve measured their handsets. Canalys counts the particular Redmi Note 8 & 8T as a single device (which these people essentially are, barring the 8T’s support for NFC), and places it in initial, ahead of the Galaxy A51. However, these people both agree that among Google android phones, midrange models are taking over.
It’s not an completely new trend. Previous reports declared that the bestselling Android phones of 2019 were also less expensive Galaxy A-series and Xiaomi Redmi models. But Winter’s comments claim that the trend towards cheaper Android mobile phones has continued into this year, and it is accelerating as a result of post-virus economies.
Apple appears to be the exception towards the rule. Canalys pegs the iPhone 11 as the bestselling phone of the initial quarter of the year, with the apple iphone 11 Professional Max and Pro taking the sixth and tenth places respectively. But now that Apple made a serious effort to re-enter an even more affordable price category with the new iPhone SE, next quarter’s data could display the price-sensitive trend spreading in order to iOS.
